Chapter 10

1. Read Bush v. Gore in the text.  Do you agree with the majority or the dissenting opinion?  Why? Well, its the rules, you must have 270 electoral votes. But in my opinion I think they should declare a winner by who has the most votes, period. Not by the electoral votes, each state represents a certain amount of electoral votes, it sounds confusing to me.
2. Is the ability to fundraise too important in elections?  In other words, are good candidates prevented from running because they cannot raise the needed funds?  Can/should something be done to correct this if it is a problem? I think there should be something done about this. I'm sure there are plenty of good candidates that have lost a chance to run due to not raising enough funds.
3. Why is there such voter apathy - in other words, why is there often such low voter turnout for elections?  Is there a way to rectify this problem? I think people feel like their vote don't really count that, that one vote couldn't make a difference but it really can, those "one votes" add up and make the election what it is. I feel like people are so discouraged about what's going on lately and feel like its a losing battle.

  1. I agree that something should be done about the amount spent on campaigns and presidential elections. In the election between Obama and McCain over 900 million dollars was spent during this election process. That seems like a lot of wasted resources for something that goes away overnight after the election.

On comment 3, I also agree. One thing that came to mind with me is that the individuals that are nominated seem to be more puppets on a string rather than the leaders that they need to be. This I think discourages voters more than anything.

    1. I see your point on the votes, but do you think it was wrong for them to order a hand count? Or do you feel the states were trustworthy enough to have control over hand counting the votes? I agree with you on the last question. There are a lot of citizens who feel it is pointless to put effort into voting for who runs the country, state, county, or city. And sometimes (in one or two of these) it is true. However, in issues such as the president, it is very important and those “one votes” do add up. You make a good point on that one.

Also, Nathan made a great point here. There are too many puppets and not enough people who can stand up on their own.

  2. I agree I think they are spending way to much money on companies and that maybe if this could be fix it would help with the low rate of votes that are turning out. If people had more chose maybe they would go out and vote.

  3. It is confusing. I feel like Florida had some counting issues. I feel like they counted so many times and had a different answer each time that how can any of it be accurate. It like counting money you should have the same number at the end each time. If you don't then someone else need to count for you. When they had the machine count it, they didn't like the answer.

  4. For the first question, I agreed with the majority. I think that the states are too biased to be able to be in control of the elections. If the federal courts are in charge of counting the votes, there vote be fraud voting or issues coming up with the winner. On the last question, I feel like most voters are just fed up with the way elections are going and the candidates that are running.

  5. I agree with you! It is completely confusing and I think that the people should be voting for the president not the electoral college. Part of me wonders why we even vote if it doesnt matter what we want they just look at it it doesnt necessarily sway their opinion. I also agree that people dont vote because they dont think it counts my husband just voted this passed election for the first time ever and that was just because I was so he went with me. People dont feel like it matters so why waste their time..

  6. Great job, I agree that we the people should actually have more say so in who gets elected to office instead of electoral votes.
