Chapter 6

1. Is American news media too dependent upon polls?  Is it appropriate for news agencies to create polls and then report on them?  Why or why not? I don’t think American’s are too dependent on polls. Personally I like them.  I think it’s appropriate for new agencies to create polls and report on them as long as they doing their job and making a point with it. I think they are a good way to show and understand things than just watching someone read off of their paper.

2. How important is political party identification to you (e.g. as a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, etc.)?  Was it more or less important to your parents & grandparents?  Does it seem more or less important to your friends?  Why or why not? I think it’s very important, it shows what you stand for and don’t stand for. However, I think everyone should respect for what political party everyone may be. I think it’s more important to my grandparents especially, and also my parents. My reason is because they are older, they have been around longer and understand how important it is. They have been around and witnessed things a younger generation has not.

3. Do you feel that you opinion of politics is more influenced by economic issues or by social issues?  Why? I think my opinion is more influenced by economic issues, Its becoming very scary. It’s a very serious matter.  I think everyone is worried that they may lose their job and if so, you may lose everything else.

  1. I completely agree with your point on the media’s dependence on polls. There are absolutely too many people who would not understand them just by hearing a run down. Statistics the media represents by using charts, etc are a GREAT way for many citizens to actually put a sentence into a picture they can actually interpret. Your grandparents view on the importance of political party identification goes right alongside the textbook as well! The generational changes that happen all the time when it comes to importance of values and priorities. It’s great to see your concerns are based off more economic reasons than by friends or family. You are seeing the bigger picture than just the belief of those on your porch. That’s something a lot of people struggle with. They place a stronger hand on the side of being accepted than on the side of being respected and loyalty to their selves.

  2. I like what you said about you both said about the media. I agree and have to admit I'm one of those people who need the nice graphs and charts to help me understand what's going on. I disagree with you on number 2 but It is just my personal opinion. I look more at the issues and what the candid's are saying about the issues then I do at what party they are. However I do agree that it is very important for our grandparents and our parents. I also agree with you number 3 issue. I find that I am more influenced by the economy as well. Even more so with the government shutdown.

  3. I agree with most of what you said but I disagree on the News agencies making up a poll and then reporting on it. That makes it to easy for them to 'fix' what they say or report only what they want to. I also listen to the candidate's and what they have to say. I usually don't pay to much attention to which party they belong to, at least at first. Once I've listened, then I decide which one I like. I don't think my grandparents had much to do with politics.. I know at least one set of grandparents never voted. I don't think they owned a tv or radio for the that matter.

  4. I agree about parents and grandparents having labels. IF asked my parents always say they are strictly republical and that is the only way they ever vote, but I think if I agree with a democrat on more issues I would vote for them. Just because they arent in the "party" that I would normally agree on doesnt mean they dont have some of the same ideas that I do.
