1. Freedom of Speech: How important is it? Does the freedom go "too far"? What areas of speech should not be protected? Freedom of speech is very important. It's the right to say what you want and how you feel. Do what you want. But this all should be done in an appropriate manner. For an example if you don't like someone you don't have the right to shoot them. However, if that someone is harming you then you have the right to protect yourself. I think it's all about the manner that it's done in.
2. Freedom of Religion: Is separation of church and state necessary? Why or why not? Yes I think it should be separation between the two. Freedom of Religion in a church studies religion. Freedom of Religion in the state don't necessary study a certain religion. In a church, they study a certain religion and in state they study all types of religion. So yes I think there should be a separation between the two. I feel like everyone should be able to practice their religion.
3. Criminal Procedure: Are defendant's rights crucial to our system of government? Why or why not? Many argue that defendants have too many rights - do you agree? Why or why not? I think these defendant's rights are crucial. Without these its hard for people to have any privacy. They protect the investigation and what is used in trail. I think that defendant's have too many rights. I think they should be a little more harder on them.

I agree with most of what you say. But on the point about defendant's having too many rights, I disagree. How many times have you or someone you know been suspected or accused of doing something you didn't do? Or been punished for smething you did but it was the best option in front of you? What if you witnessed a brutal altercation between people and defended one of weaker power. If you were charged with this by one of those who were overpowering the one you defended, wouldn't you want the right to show your case? There are always loopholes. These rights are put into play to try and keep the loopholes available to a minimum. While some may get off scott-free, there are many, many more who have received justice for what they've done or had done to them due to these rights.
ReplyDeleteYou made good points Cassandra!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I agree with your point of separation between church and state. It seems that if our government decided to get directly involved with any one specific religion, that religion would over time begin to dominate the country. With this overall domination of one religion, others would begin to fade away leaving us without our freedom of religion.
ReplyDeleteTollettnr I never really thought about it that way. I was raised going to church everytime the church was open and I went to a christian school as well so I guess I forget that alot of people have different beliefs than I do. Its hard to be open minded about it when my whole life was taught a certain way and I never experienced anyone elses beliefs.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you describe and go into detail about these touchy topics, great job I agree with you.
ReplyDeleteI disagree in the statement that defendants have to many rights. What if you were falsely accused and need some of those rights. it may seem that way if everyone who was tried were guilty but I don't think that is the case I do however think there are to many lop holes that are manipulated by crafty lawyers.
ReplyDeleteI disagree that defendants have too many rights. These rights are in place to protect the innocent people who are falsely accused of crimes. Without these rights in place many innocent people would be found guilty, and in the case of representation what if you could not afford an attorney and the right to representation was not in place? Then the state would not have to appoint you a lawyer and you would be left defenseless.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on separation of church and state. People should have the right to practice their religion. We all have different beliefs. I believe if you are not harming anyone by practicing your religion then you should have every right to practice. If you do harm someone by practicing your beliefs then I think the government should step in by following the laws. You should be able to belief in what you want to believe.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said on freedom of speech. I think it is very important but I also think that there should be some restrictions on it. I also liked what you said about separation of church and state. People should be able to believe as they want.
